The Southwestern School District covers a large geographic area and as a result, studentscan spend long periods of time on the school vans. The kits include activities and objects that stimulate student’s senses helping to keep them calm and provide enrichment on long commutes. The project was co-sponsored with Junior Girl Scouts from Troop 235 who used the grant activities toward their Bronze Community Services Awards.

Theblankets were then donatedand distributed tochildren through the DuPage County Chapter of Project Linus.

“This hasbeen a great experience for ourstudents,” said Seal. “They were so thoughtful when picking outfabricsand envisioning their blankets. Their creation of theblankets was a totally selfless act. It was great to see our students caring for others.”

Project Linus is a national, not-for-profit organization with a mission toprovide blankets to needy children inhospitals, shelters, social service agenciesand other locations.Thisyear marks yearfive ofthe IEA’s “Schools and Community Outreach by Educators (SCORE)”cash grants being available to IEA members.

SCORE grant helps Kirby teachers support families at Ronald McDonald House /2017/05/22/score-grant-helps-kirby-teachers-support-families-at-ronald-mcdonald-house/ Mon, 22 May 2017 21:47:21 +0000 /?p=47179 The Kirby Education Association, students, and sponsoring teachers Cassie Gregerson and Lynda Miles utilized their $1,000 SCORE grant in support of children and families at a local Ronald McDonald House (RMH). The grant funded school supplies District #140 children used to make “duct tape, flower top” pens which were sold during lunch periods. Educators used the opportunity to teach students about product creation, supply and demand, and other business practices. The $278 in sales proceeds were then donated to the RMH.

In addition, teachers and students filled the RMH pantry with a variety of foods for families to take to their rooms. They also utilized grant funds to purchase baking supplies and used them to make cookies and treats for families staying at the RMH. Other grant funds were used to purchase toiletries for the rooms and craft supplies for the art room.

In total, some 35 students were involved in the support project, soon starting their own RMH Club. The effort to support the RMH had been inspired in part by a District #140 student and family that utilized the facility last year.

SCORE grant helps Glenbard South teachers expand library resources /2017/05/11/score-grant-helps-glenbard-south-teachers-expand-library-resources/ Thu, 11 May 2017 13:49:59 +0000 /?p=47112 Megan Webster and Ellen Hill, Special Education Teachers at Glenbard South High School, were awarded a $1,000 IEA SCORE grant to help expand the Glen Ellyn Public Library’s section of high-interest/low-level reading materials and raise awareness to these resources.

On May 2-3, Webster and Hill hosted Book Talks at the Glen Ellyn Public Library, an event in which students present their book reviews on some of the new books purchased through the grant. The event is part of the teachers’ initiative to expand library resources for young adults with developmental disabilities.

SCORE grant helps fund student musical in Schiller Park /2017/04/27/score-grant-helps-fund-student-musical-in-schiller-park/ Thu, 27 Apr 2017 13:59:53 +0000 /?p=47068 Washington Elementary School and teacher Mary Kren used a $1,000 IEA SCORE grant to help fund costumes and set construction materials for the recent student production of High School Musical Jr.The musical starred fourthand fifth-graders from Washington School in Schiller Park School District 81. Approximately 100 students were involved in the production and performance.

Kren is a fifth-grade teacher at Washington. She also serves as dance choreographer for school musicals. The performance took place on March 9 at Lincoln Middle School in Schiller Park.

The Sycamore High School Art Club and sponsoring art teacher, Katherine Katz, have been awarded a SCORE grant for the purchase of materials for their “Empty Bowls” project. The project is designed to raise awareness about hunger in the community and throughout the state and nation. Art Club students, along with community members and local artists, create, fire and sell handmade ceramic bowls, with proceeds from sales and donations going to the Sycamore Food Pantry. An Empty Bowls community event and sale will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., April19, in the Sycamore High School cafeteria.

Yorkville EA member selected for SCORE grant /2017/02/06/yorkville-ea-member-selected-for-score-grant/ Mon, 06 Feb 2017 22:17:53 +0000 /?p=46614 The grant was awarded to Shannon Martin, a Yorkville High School physical education, health and drivers education teacher, for her creation of a driver safety and awareness education program. The education and awareness program includes highlighting the dangers of distracted driving, making the community aware of younger drivers, and asking all drivers to be hands free on mobile devices. Martin’s program is multifaceted and includes collaboration with the Yorkville Police Department, Illinois State Police, the Illinois Secretary of State, and local businesses.

The funds are being used for purchase of electric bass and guitar amplifiers that will allow a greater number of students to participate in band. The BIG SCORE CHECK was presented at a school board meeting on Nov. 14.

Members of the Greenville EducationAssociation receive SCORE grant /2016/11/15/members-of-the-greenville-education-association-receive-score-grant/ Tue, 15 Nov 2016 17:56:27 +0000 /?p=46314 The grant was used tocontributefunds to bring the Central Illinois Foodbank mobile food pantryto Greenville for food distribution on Nov. 9. Members of the Greenville Education Association andGreenville ESP Association, along with several district students helped with the mobile food pantry. A total of 54 volunteers unpacked and distributed food to about 168 Bond County households. These households included 544 individuals (215 children and 107 seniors). Watch the video below.

Johannah Wininsky’s Dance Lab II class at New Trier High School is getting ready for its performance on June 2 and 3 at the Hamlin Park Fieldhouse Theater in Chicago.With a little help from an IEA SCORE grant, the class did everything: design, choreography, costumes, performance, publicity, theater rental and lighting.The experience is totally professional!Congratulations! CG Buddies

“CG Buddies” at Cary Grove High School has been connecting students with special needs with each other and with mainstream peer buddies for two years.The club was created by Speech Therapist Tammy Jauch and is funded in part by the IEA SCORE grant program.CG Buddies provides a welcoming network of friends for special needs students who sometimes have a difficult time connecting with peers.Students and their peer buddies meet, visit restaurants and local attractions, go to movies and otherwise engage within the community.CG Buddies was recognized at the District #155 Board of Education meeting on April 19.Tammy Jauch is third from right, holding the SCORE check.
